Why a village school matters?
In the steep valleys of District Bagh, most children walk miles along rocky trails to reach the nearest classroom—if one exists at all. Many, especially girls, stay home to herd goats or fetch water, repeating a cycle of illiteracy and limited opportunity. A community-run primary school breaks that cycle by giving every child, regardless of background or gender, a safe place to learn, grow and dream.
How the programme works
- Neighbourhood campus – Built beside the mosque on donated land, the school keeps travel time under 15 minutes for all pupils.
- Blended curriculum – National Urdu and English syllabi are paired with practical life-skills, Qur’anic ethics and local heritage studies.
- Flexible school calendar – Timetables shift during harvest and snowfall seasons so families never feel forced to choose between work and education.
- Teacher-training pipeline – Scholarships encourage talented graduates to pursue teaching diplomas, ensuring qualified staff return to serve their own community.
- Parents’ committee – Mothers and fathers take turns overseeing lunches, maintenance and cultural events, anchoring the school in village life.
Impact so far
- 120 children enrolled, 55 percent of them girls—a first for the area.
- Daily attendance above 90 percent after introducing the winter-warmth programme with donated sweaters and shoes.
- Reading levels up two grades on average in the inaugural year, measured by standardised Urdu comprehension tests.
- Drop in child labour as families now see tangible value in keeping youngsters in class.
Next milestones
- Library & digital corner – Stock 1 000 storybooks and install low-power tablets loaded with offline encyclopaedias.
- Rain-water harvesting washrooms – Provide reliable sanitation and hand-washing facilities, especially vital for girls’ attendance.
- Community teaching garden – An outdoor lab where science, nutrition and environmental stewardship lessons come alive.
How you can help
- Gift school supplies – Exercise books, pencils, art sets and sports equipment keep learning hands-on and fun.
- Sponsor a meal programme – A simple locally cooked lunch encourages attendance and improves concentration.
- Volunteer or share your expertise – From remote storytelling sessions to curriculum design, your skills can travel where roads struggle to reach.
